Master Charles L. Boleware began his martial arts training at age 13 under Grandmaster W.W. Wilson at 210 Market Street in Newark. Training with Grandmaster Wilson opened his eyes to a world he had previously only seen on television and in the movies. Although the training was demanding, he embraced it fully. He did not yet realize that this path would shape his life in the martial arts forever.
Around 1974, he began studying Iaido with Yoshiteru Otani Sensei and remained his student for over 40 years. With the exception of Grandmaster Wilson, all of his instructors were Japanese, including Dr. Hatsume, Kawabata Sensei, and his Kendo teacher, Sensei Aramaki. He also trained with Professor Miles of Sanuces Ryu, a system founded by the great Moses Powell. His studies included sword, jo, empty hand, and ninjutsu.
Throughout his journey, he maintained a close relationship with Grandmaster Wilson, often seeking his guidance and approval. Grandmaster Wilson supported his path and later, after observing him teach, invited him to teach at his dojo. He accepted with great honor.
After many years, fate brought him back to train again with Grandmaster Wilson. Following the passing of his teacher Otani Sensei in 2004, he continued his sword training under Kunikazu Yahagi Sensei. He continues to train diligently and remains devoted to Grandmaster Wilson.
Today Sensei Boleware teaches on a regular basis at NYBA.
