2026 – GNYNF FALL TAIKAI

The GNYNF board will be hosting our first Fall Taikai on Sunday, October 18th!

This taikai will focus on skill building for our dangai competitors, new shinpan, and those new to naginata taikai logistics. As such, most events are dangai only and yudansha volunteers will be facilitating taikai operations training for those not entered in shiai events. More information may be found in the attached yoko and in future communications.

Participation is highly encouraged for practitioners at any level, especially those new to naginata—we really want this taikai to serve as an opportunity to become familiar with taikai etiquette, competitive environments, and event production. If you have any questions, please get in touch with your dojo rep and they will direct you to the appropriate channels.

  • We encourage participation in as many events as you are qualified for. If you would like to participate in any of the engi-kyogi or team shiai events but do not have a partner / team, we can select one for you!

    • Open to competitors who identify as female.

    • Ages 13-17

    • Age eligibility is determined at the time of competition.

    Women’s Individual Shiai:

    • Open to competitors who identify as female.

    • Must meet the applicable rank requirements at the time of application.

    • Competitors must be at least 18 years of age, though exceptions may be granted based on the discretion of the GNY Executive Committee.

    • Age eligibility is determined at the time of competition.

    Men’s Individual Shiai:

    • Open to competitors who identify as male.

    • Must meet the applicable rank requirements at the time of application.

    • Competitors must be at least 18 years of age, though exceptions may be granted based on the discretion of the GNY Executive Committee.

    Open Dangai Division:

    • Gender inclusive.

    • Competitors must meet the applicable rank requirements at the time of application.

    • Competitors must be at least 18 years of age, though exceptions may be granted based on the discretion of the GNY Executive Committee. Team Shiai:

    • Teams are open with no restrictions on rank, gender, or dojo affiliation.

    • Competitors must be at least 18 years of age, though exceptions may be granted based on the discretion of the GNY Executive Committee.

    • Substitutions are permitted when notifying the court manager at least 30 minutes before the event begins .

    • Competitors will be assigned to team positions by the event organizers. 2 Cross-Entry:

    • There are no limits on the number of events a competitor may enter.

    • Cross-entry is permitted as long as eligibility requirements are met.

  • • Rules and regulations are based off of the 15th Edition of All Japan Naginata Federation Match Rules and Regulations (May 1st, 2017).

    ○ Tsuki and ezune strikes are not permitted in the Youth Girls’ Shiai event

    • All individual shiai matches will be single-elimination bracket style; team shiai will follow a round-robin format if time permits.

    • Individual Shiai matches are 3 minutes, followed by a hantei.

    ○ The final and 3rd-place matches will have one 2-minute encho

    • Team Shiai matches are 3 minutes, followed by a hikiwake. If there is still a tie, a daihyosen (“sudden death match”) will be played by a representative player for 2 minutes. If there is no point scored within the allotted time, a hantei will determine the winner.

    • If necessary due to scheduling constraints or low participation, events may be combined or cancelled at the discretion of the organizers.

  • • Participants who are only doing one event (e.g. engi-kyogi or team shiai) will be assigned to the volunteering seminar, where you will learn how to run every aspect of a taikai (e.g. court setup, scoreboard, record keeping, timers).

    ○ Volunteer assignments will be given out the weekend of Oct. 10-11

    • Multiple online seminars ahead of time will be held during the week of Oct. 12 - 17

    ○ Details regarding online registration will be determined after the registration deadline.

    ○ Participation is optional but highly encouraged, especially for registrants who have not volunteered at a taikai in the past.

  • $30 – for Engi-Kyogi only + Taikai Operations Training

    $35 – for multiple events

    Yudansha volunteer leads will be offered free entry to Team Shiai-Kyogi.

    Non-competitor participants who will be shinpan have free entry.

    Yudansha competitors who offer to lead volunteers will be given free entry to the team shiai event.

    No refunds will be given after the registration deadline.

    Payment must be made in full at the time of registration. You will NOT be confirmed for registration until we receive your payment by the event registration deadline of Friday, October 9th, 2026 . We accept the following payment methods, though PayPal and Zelle are preferred:

  • • All participants must bring their own equipment.

    • Gi and hakama are not required to compete in the engi-kyogi event.

    • A bogu zekken must be worn by all shiai competitors.

    • There will be no naginata, bogu, or uniform rentals available.

    • All participants will be required to sign a liability release form and a photo release form upon registration.
